I guess I'm not clear on exactly what Axe was about. Is it a whole separate language or just something to enhance BASIC? I always assumed the latter. I mean can a viable program be made with only axe routines and no basic?

Sorry about that Happybob, I'm don't have any permissions over there at UTI except for a few of the contest stuff.

I have it posted at RevSoft and guests are allowed to download attachments.

As for your question, yes you can program your game in all Axe or any of the other hybrid-basic languages.

The link should be updated, the old one you couldn't download. But I realized that almost right away, it should be good now.

Ok I have posted a topic with the official rules and judging criteria for the contest.
I hope this answers some questions that people had. If you got anymore feel free to ask here at Revsoft or on the thread posted below.

Cool to hear it's starting. Should I wait until the scoring/rules are posted before posting a news?

Also what language is allowed? BASIC, ASM, Axe, BBC Basic, FastRPL, hybrid?
Yeah I would wait DJ, that will all be posted on the 11th.

Computer Programming / Re: Looking for info...about java
« on: March 07, 2011, 05:19:18 pm »
Java is a fairly simple language. As you learn more and more from/about it, I think you will really like OOP. It is a higher-level language that is extremely portable and can be used in a wide variety of applications. Plus it has a built-in garbage collector for memory management. Which means you will be pretty spoiled, because a lot of higher-level languages don't have that and if they do they aren't very good. Plus with a wide variety of tutorials and all the API's provided by Sun make it a great, language to pick up for a beginner.

The joint programming competition starts today. The contest will run until June 6th. The judges will be representatives from United-TI, Revolution Software and Maxcoderz. If you would like to enter into the contest, you may create a topic in the Programming Competitions section of the United-TI forums. The rules and scoring rubric will be posted on March 11th. As well as some information regarding the prizes. If anyone has any questions you can post them here or send any one of the United-TI staff, Revolution Software staff or Maxcoderz staff a private message.

All participants in the contest must create a trading card type of game.
We would recommend holding off on programming anything until the scoring rubric/rules are posted on the 11th.

All parties want to thank all the people who voted in the contest poll.
We are all committed to making this an excellent competition with excellent prizes!

Thanks again and good luck,
-Madskillz

I wouldn't be giving to many ideas out there on your possible entries. You are gonna want something that sets yours apart remember.  ;)

As for the languages being judged separately, as of now I don't think so. I think we are going to lump all entries together. But that could change by Monday.

Yeah RPG would be tough to do in 3 months.

Can we do a port of a game, as long as we use new code and there hasn't been a port of the game previously?
-Yeah a port would be fine as long as you use new code.

Now I'm confused. Do you mean only people under the age limit are eligible for physical prizes but anyone can enter? Perhaps I should wait until details are posted, I'm guessing you don't want to spoil anything. =)

Yeah, everybody stay tuned. More information will given on Monday.
