Trust me, I considered tackling such a project and decided against it - walking animations, hitting animations, injured animations, animations for every special move... that's tens if not hundreds of hand-drawn sprites - it's more suitable for a team project rather than a single job. Did you ever consider using TestCollide16x() from ExtGraph?  It's remarkably fast for collision detection between sprites.  I think it'd make some of the stuff easier for a SSB type game.

edit: and as for sprites, you could always get them from someone else who's really  talented at pixel art.  

 I'm against using ripped graphics in my games. Collision is not a problem, like I said, all the animation sequences are. Once I finish my TI-Freakware entry and some other projects I had in mind I might make my last calc project, a monster-sized fighting game :)smile.gif
