TI-82 Plus officially announced!
« on: February 11, 2014, 02:28:47 pm »
After a TI-82 prototype was revealed by TI-Planet yesterday, TI has officially announced the upcoming release of that calculator model. Originally known as the TI-83 Plus.Fr, this model will replace the TI-82 Stats.Fr, which was a TI-83 running a French ROM. A new version of the TI-83 Plus.Fr, now using TI-84 Plus Silver Edition hardware and OSes, is already available since school started.

The TI-82 Plus will feature a 6 MHz Z80 processor, 24 KB of user RAM, 160 KB of Flash and a 96x64 monochrome LCD. The installed OSes will show "TI-83 Plus" on the screen, much like how the newer TI-83 Plus.Fr models (the black ones with an USB port) displays "TI-84 Plus Silver Edition" instead of "TI-83 Plus".

So from now on, this will be the model number difference between France and other countries, should you run into one of those models:

France - Other
TI-82 Stats.Fr -> TI-83
TI-82 Plus -> TI-83 Plus
TI-83 Plus.Fr USB -> TI-84 Plus Silver Edition
TI-84 Pocket.Fr -> TI-84 Plus

The pricing is apparently going to be the same as the TI-82 Stats.Fr, kinda like how the renamed TI-84 Plus Silver Edition is available for the price of a TI-83 Plus in France.

Will the original TI-82 and TI-89 eventually going to be re-released as the TI-81 Stats and TI-86.Fr or something like that?

Wait, it's now the same mess as Casio and AFX/Graph100, FX9xxx/Graph X5... But have the calcs the same hardware as the foreign ones?

Indeed, TI seems to be heading the way Casio did in the 90's and early 2000's with calc names >.<

I think the TI-82 Stats.Fr has the same hardware as the 83+ but half of the Flash isn't wired, so it's impossible to reflash the calc nor use that part of the ROM. The 82 Plus is the same as the 83+ but it uses two lithium batteries instead of the stronger one in older models.

Or they are heading the way Apple did.
Not only they lock down the Nspire, but now they also sell their stuff twice (or more) by only changing its name and saying "it's a(nother) revolution".
I own: 83+ ; 84+SE ; 76.fr ; CX CAS ; Prizm ; 84+CSE

So, TI releases a 'new' calculator which is basically just old hardware in the case of an other old calculator? It seems like TI isn't even trying anymore.
My projects
 - The Lost Survivors (Unreal Engine) ACTIVE [GameCommandoSquad main project]
 - Oxo, with single-calc multiplayer and AI (axe) RELEASED (screenshot) (topic)
 - An android version of oxo (java)  ACTIVE

We need more printing calculators in new shells!

Get on that, TI.

To be honest, I think they are trying to reduce the pricing scale of calculators in France to compete better against Casio, who has a much stronger market share there than in North America, so they replace lower end calcs with better hardware and keep the same price tag and so on, with every other model. I'M betting that it's only a matter of time before the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition gets released as the TI-84 Plus.Fr in France. Another possible reason is the same as Hayleia said: They rename models to make it look like they're brand new revolutionary models to lure customers.

That reminds me, do you remember back when students swapped the TI-89 case with a 83 Plus one to circumvent tests restrictions?

I personally do not, but doing so might not help since the key labels are confusing and turning on the calculator would produce a TI-89 screen.
Due to dissatisfaction, I will be inactive on Omnimaga until further notice. (?? THP hasn't been much success and there's also the CE. I might possibly be here for a while.)
If you want to implore me to come back, or otherwise contact me, I can be found on GitHub (bluebear94), Twitter (@melranosF_), Reddit (/u/Fluffy8x), or e-mail (if you know my address). As a last resort, send me a PM on Cemetech (bluebear94) or join Touhou Prono (don't be fooled by the name). I've also enabled notifications for PMs on Omnimaga, but I don't advise using that since I might be banned.

True, but back then it actually worked it seems. Teachers probably didn't bother looking hard enough. As for the keys it depends if the user knows each key by heart.

When i saw the news about the prototype on ti-planet i figured this would become the new 83+ for france. It makes sense as the 83+ is now a 84+ over there. It'd be a lot easier if they just made the model names standard worldwide though. It'd cause a lot less confusion that way IMO.

All that said, i do like the case, and would like to get one for my collection eventually.

I personally will pass on this one, since I already have a 83+ I don't use. I might as well swap my 83+ case with the 84+CSE one and remove the faceplate, assuming it fits, and it would pretty much look like a TI-82 Plus shaped like a TI-84+SE :P

I might still try to get a TI-76.Fr eventually, though, since I don't have any model running its ROM. (It's similar to the TI-83, but features were removed and the ALPHA key was replaced with the TI-73 text typing thing. It's not exactly the same OS as a TI-73, though)

Makes sense. :) I don't have a TI-76.Fr either, but it is also one I'd like to get eventually. :P

Wtf are they doing. O.O They're completely messing up the names and continue to sell outdated hardware. <_<
* Streetwalker slaps TI :P
The only calcs that should remain in the z80 series are the 84+SE and the CSE. At least they ditched the 83 so they're making progress here. :P

I know that right. But they ditched OMAP recently IIRC.
And yes I'm back (hopefully). Thank you for the peanuts. :D
